Do you believe me if I say that there are methods to improve brain power that seems unlikely to be true?
In this post, I want to discuss the odd ways I have personally tried and confirmed to improve brain power.
These odd ways are not common as they may be funny and tricky; however, that is the reason they are called ‘Odd Ways.’
By vividly following the below odd ways, you will start noticing a remarkable improvement in your overall brain power and its ease of processing data.

10 Proven Odd Ways to Improve Brain Power
1. Use Your Left Hand More Often (Or Right Hand If You’re A Lefty)
It has been researched that handedness is connected to asymmetries in brain performance.
Which implies the right hemisphere of the brain coordinates the left side of the body and the left hemisphere coordinates the right side of the body.
This connection of the brain position has confirmed the using of your opposite hand to enhance neural networks in the brain and as well breed new ones.
Right hands are commonly used for most of the activities, usually rendering left hands idle while some people find it easy to use their left hand instead of right hand.
Trying to become ambidextrous sometimes will have a great impact on your brain.
Switching your dominant hand when doing activities will trigger your brain cells and force your brain to adapt, thereby empowering your brain.
For example, make an effort to use your non-dominant hand to control computer, brush your teeth, write your notes, and much more.
You will be noticed that it is not easy to be accurate with your hand movement but it helps.
2. Start Taking New Routes
The brain is discovered to be an autopilot with limited stimulation on your routine commute.
Taking the same route every time you go to work, home, market and other places which your brain has been adapted to, make your brain to be stagnant.
Taking unfamiliar routes to all these places will activate the hippocampus and cortex in your brain.
Take a bold step today, make the decision to be taking or driving different routes on your way home from work every day.
Bill Gate once said he used to drive an alternate route on his way home each day from work only to stimulate his brain, today; he is a successful person resulting from his effort to use his brain to invent the computer.
This is not only applicable to driving, but it also applicable to when biking, walking and even riding on public transportation in every of your movements.
Changing your environment also helps in achieving this goal of alternating your routes.
Expose to a new environment by eating at a new cafeteria, going to a new clubhouse, travel to see a new friend will help your brain in stimulating your brain and improve your brain power.
3. Learn One New Thing (And Become Good At It)
Learning a new thing has been researched to be helpful in improving your brain power.
When you confront your medulla oblongata with something new it stimulates and charges your brain.
However, to achieve this aim, make sure it is only one new thing at a time.
It is not a situation where you begin to try different (new) things which will not make the brain to sense it wants to adapt to a new thing.
For example, at a time, you try to read a special section of the newspaper you usually skip, play a musical instrument, learn a new language, try an unfamiliar recipe for your dinner and much more with a view to trying to go out of your ordinary.
The key word here is to ensure it is ONLY one new thing. Why only one? You will be more focused.
In the process of being focused on that one new thing, your brain tends to restructure to the new style, and help develops a new neural pathway which strengthens the brain power the more.
Let’s take for instance, learning a new language.
Taking up a class in a second language stimulates your frontal lobe; a section of the brain that mainly likely to diminish with time and age.
However, learning a new language is an excellent brain trainer.
This is because it requires your total sensitivity and your 100% concentration, as said by Tony Buzan.
Learning a new language on its own has been found to equip more structure to the brain and enhances the brain’s speech centers.
It may seem to take much time in enrolling for a program or class, however, its benefits worth it.
Adults who speak more than one language has been researched likely to:
- Have more advanced general knowledge
- Have better focus, attention, and concentration
- Possess mental flexibility
- Have better memorization skills
- Have a better listening skill
- Be creative and prolific
- Can adapt to a new task quickly
- Score higher on reading and vocabulary tests
4. Quit Multitasking (Unless You’re A Computer)
According to research, multitasking is not good for our brain. It causes more damage to the brain.
If you want to improve your brain power, you need to quit multitasking as a matter of urgency.
Concentrate and focus on a particular task at a time is the best way to improve your speed and accuracy.
Researchers have confirmed that the brain requires about 8 seconds to processing a given piece of information to the brain.
Now, consider this. Assuming you are receiving a call on the phone, and at the same time, you are trying to add a recipe to your cooking while washing plates, there is chances that you may forget to finish one or more of these tasks as one task may take more of your attention than the other.
The brain tends to switch from one task to another.
In your attempt to carry out your works very quickly, multitasking may effectually slow you down behind schedule, make you forgetful and as well subject you to errors.
What happens when you can’t find your car key when you are already late for work?
When you come back from work, in an attempt to drop your car key on the TV, while you are still on phone call and you are as well signaling to your wife to pass a piece of information, you are likely to forget where you drop the drop.
This will cause unnecessary stress the second day when you are going to work. So, avoid multitasking to save yourself from unnecessary stress and improve your brain power.
5. Ask Questions (Even If It’s Stupid Or Provocative)
Asking question is an extraordinary way to maintain your brain in good health and shape.
How do you think those philosophers get to be known as the smartest men alive?
They often ask questions learn more about the subjects in question.
The best way to know more and clear your doubt is by asking questions.
It will be discovered that the brilliant students always asked most of the questions asked in class after lectures during our study days in schools.
They do because they want to know everything about the subjects.
However, this thereby improves their brains as evidenced by their performances.
Adopt the habit of interrogating others and their thoughts.
Questions are designed to aggravate new ideas and thoughts and the only way to improve your brain power is to ask those intelligence questions.
You are no more in class, how do you achieve this?
Start by asking questions among your group of friends is a good idea.
Stand right in front of them and ask the questions. Another way to achieve this is by questioning yourself.
This has shown over the time that questioning and answering your own questions aids you in learning.
Don’t waste time, start right away.
6. Stop Watching TV (If Possible)
The disadvantage of watching television cannot be over-emphasized in brain power improvement.
TV has been said to make our brain passive and dormant.
Many of us cannot do without watching before going to bed.
Know this fact today.
The blue lights transmitted to your eyes as emitted from television, smartphones, computers and tablets stimulate wakefulness which suppresses the hormones like melatonin, the hormone that makes one sleepy.
Brain rotting has been attributed to watching television, though it is not the only reason but it plays a significant role for the rotting process to commence.
Also, testing confirmed that verbal IQ scores, which measure vocabulary and language skills, fell in proportion to the hours of TV watched.
It may sound impossible to do away with your black box; however, it worth considering if you are determined to improve your brain power.
Over the time, this fact has drastically reduced the rate people watch TV.
A reasonable control level of watching television may not hurt, but it does have effects on your brain functioning.
It is an undisputable fact that the habit of watching television slows down brainwaves and causes brain deterioration that affects brain power.
7. Play N-Back And Dual N-Back In The Morning
This game is one of the most effective brain training methods that put the brain into a test.
The two games have proved to be effective tools for enhancing short-term memory.
It achieves this by increasing the number of items that can be retained in the working memory which is the bottleneck of knowledge.
As contained in a study by Jaeggi et al., fluid intelligence and intelligence quotient were raised daily by the participants who completed twenty minutes of dual n-back.
This has shown a great impact on this game in improving brain power.
The truth of the matter is that your brain quickly adjusts to the situations as you force it, and that simply means that your brain is more shaped by the everyday challenges confronted by a man.
The playing of n-back or dual n-back will also salvage the influence of products such as Lumosity which usually package their games to trick neuropsychological training like the n-back game.
Playing the n-back game for ten or twenty minutes in the morning is not a bad idea as it will improve your intelligence quotient and intelligence fluid which is a good signal to your brain.
8. Lift Weight At Least Once A Week
Generally, physical exercise is good for your overall body health.
However, it especially assists your brain to be sharp and stay healthy.
Many physical exercises can improve your brain power.
Physical activities like weight lifting, yoga, jogging and much more help your brain power by increasing oxygen supply to your brain and as well minimize the risk of mental confusion that results to memory loss and some other diseases like cardiovascular and diabetes.
Weight lifting helps you to improve your brain power by creating new brain cells for optimal mental health.
Weight lifting and other physical exercises boost your heart rate and will enhances blood flow to your brain, as a result of this; it makes your memory to be at alert to perform its function optimally.
Lifting weight at least once in a week controls the chemicals in your brain and reduces stress hormones such as Cortisol, Norepinephrine, and adrenaline.
Exercise also plays a critical role in neuroplasticity by increasing growth factors and triggering new neuronal connections in the brain.
It is no doubt that different types of physical exercise benefit the health and functional state of your brain by enlarging the hippocampus.
Hippocampus is the special catalyst for brain short and long term memory.
Make it as a point of duty at least once in a week, go out there and involve in weight lifting or any other available physical exercises at your disposal.
By improving the blood circulation to your brain, it will get more oxygen and energy it needs.
9. Sleep Well Or Take A Short Nap
The research has shown that your body can stay without food and water for a reasonable period of time, but your body without sleep is at the risk of collapse.
The reasonable time a body can stay without sleep has been put at 48 hours.
Anything higher than this is not advisable.
Getting a regular seven to eight hours of rest each night will boost your memory.
Poor sleep affects many things in the body, especially your memory.
It has been observed that during sleep, the brain hold the recently acquired information together.
The longer the period of sleep the brain gets the better for the brain.
Taking a nap during the day especially after acquiring a new knowledge helps you in retaining the knowledge gained and as well as keep your brain sharp.
This is applicable to the students who have examinations.
Stay up in the night, reading and cramming without having some sleep before going to the hall does not help your brain.
This has been attributed to forgetfulness in the examination room.
Sleep is the brain reliable tool to strengthen the connection between neurons, thereby aiding quick memory and better learning.
To improve your brain power, try to have a quality sleep to recharge and revitalize your brain power.
One of the easiest ways to overcome a brain burnout is by sleeping.
10. Eat Wild Salmon At Least Once A Week
Have you asked yourself why is salmon referred to as ‘brain food’?
If I may ask, when was the last time you eat wild salmon?
Wild salmon is researched to contain many efficiency-boosting nutrients to help your body and brain functions well.
There are more to offer to your mental health from wild salmon.
The brain needs about 60% fat.
However, most of this 60% required cannot be produced by the body; hence, they are supplied by the diet or supplement we take.
These brain needed fats are called omega-3 which are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), linolenic acid (ALA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
You need DHA to make sure your brain works properly.
Unfortunately, many people ignore the importance of these omega-3 acids, and therefore they don’t consume it sufficiently.
Thereby affecting your brain building and as a result, reduces your brain power.
It has been demonstrated that the brain needs more of omega-3 acids than any other systems of the body.
Your brain membranes optimally perform with adequate consumption of DHA and EPA in your diet.
It controls and regulates emotions, moods and as well starve-off depression.
The sources of these omega-3 acids are primarily from wild salmon and others from tuna, mackerel, sardines, as well as oil nut and seeds like flax oil, walnuts, and flaxseed.
The successful treatment of many mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s chronic fatigue syndrome, Schizophrenia, and stress have been attributed to consumption of omega-3.
Eating salmon especially while pregnant or nursing baby can increase academic performance and learning in children.
This is due to high level of DHA present in salmon to supply to the retina and central nervous system.
School children feeding with wild salmon also enhances the prevention of ADHD as well as increasing their academic performances.
Ensure you eat wild salmon at least once in a week to improve your brain power.
The brain controls all the activities performed by the body.
If your brain is not in a healthy state, it affects many things in the body.
Apart from learning, many activities such as walking, seeing, talking, hearing, smelling and much more are coordinated by the brain.
Hence, there is a need for your brain to be energized for your mental fitness.
Strive to improve your brain power on a daily basis, that is the key to your overall body coordination.
